A college graduate Matchi was visiting his parents in Essex in 1999, when he spotted a matchbox covered in a colorful design.
As he flipped it over, a matchbox filled with matches followed.

His memory seems to differ, “I wasn’t buying them. I was buying a package of matches.”
-
Later in his life, Matchi was also frustrated by the lack of matches on supermarket shelves.
At that time, Matchies sold thousands of matchboxes each week, and the business was profitable. The interest from Jones was so strong, he decided to take his idea to the States.

The company moved to the UK in 2001.

Their new website was set up, but no customers came through the door.
Matchies decided to call in a team of experts for advice, including Matthew Kluger, President of Monogram Boxes, and founder of Matchbox Brand. In 2005, Matchies Machboxes bought Machboxes, Inc., a shop based in California that had a good reputation for selling matchboxes. That enabled the company to gain financial support and create the first nationwide roll-out of matchboxes.
